COTA-Advisory Council Minutes

COTA AC
Meeting Notes 11/14/07
Members in attendance: Melissa Hattman, Sarah Larson, Artie Fowler, Hillary Fuhrman (DHE ex-offcio)
Members absent: Cindy Fiedler, Rita Gulstad, Bruce Miles, Yvette Sweeney, Kandis Smith (COTA ex-offcio), Jamie Carpenter, Dough Couch
Melissa had received an e-mail from David Conley as a possible speaker for the Transfer and Articulations Conference. She will also contact Michael McCauley, past president of NACADA, for background information on him. Dr. Stein will be speaking with David Conley, as there was discussion of him fitting our needs as we want to be sure this conference is not curriculum or assessment specific but about national trends and what is specific to Missouri in terms of initiatives and policy implications of curriculum alignment.
Registration should be online within the next week. It will be printable with descriptive paragraphs of each breakout session. We did not stipulate who was to write the review of the sessions. Registrants will need to designate their first, second, and third choice. Hillary will ask COTA who would like to lead the breakout sessions.
Breakout topics will be:
- Dual Credit
- Access to collegiate level coursework
- Policies and impact of exit level competencies
Hillary provided handouts on:
Curriculum Alignment Resources, MDHE Steering Committee Charge, Steering Committee Members, Information on Curriculum Alignment, and Information on Alignment: Missouri. These can be found on the DHE website. She cleared up questions on entry-level and exit-level competencies. Entry competencies are what students SHOULD know upon entering a freshman level class. Exit competencies are what students should know upon completion of a beginning-level college course (e.g., should know after taking Comp I, etc.). She also stated that K-12 is working on end of course exams aimed at 9th & 10th grades.
There was also discussion on METS coalition which is working on how to improve math and science for state economy.
SB389
Entry-level competencies are posted on the DHE website for comment until December 7, 2007 at the close of business. Exit level competencies should go up in mid January for comment.
There will also be a second public comment available. Final competencies are due April 15
Melissa received an e-mail from Cindy Fiedler tendering her resignation from the committee as Membership Coordinator due to other commitments. Melissa spoke with Jamie Carpenter, Bryan College, and Jamie is leaving Higher Education. Melissa will forward this information to the group to discuss replacement of these two positions. The committee must decide when someone is elected if it is an institutional membership or an individual membership. We will need input from the committee as to whether we open it up for election or go back to who was next on the ballot. We need to look at the by-laws for COTA and possibly align with what they do in order to stay a strong committee.
The agenda for the conference was discussed with Maria Gilmore, Sales Manager, and April Worth, Catering Manager. Artie will work with Jeremy and April on menus and set up. The following was decided but is subject to change.
