Benefits of Using the MDHE as Your FFEL Guarantor
As a state agency, the MDHE reinvests any earnings from administering the FFEL Program into the state of Missouri. Examples of how this benefits you include:
- The 1% Federal Default Fee (FDF) is subsidized by the MDHE for the 2008-09 and 2009-2010 academic years, when the school of attendance is a Missouri institution. Borrowers will benefit by saving the 1% fee when choosing the MDHE as their FFELP guarantor, which amounts to $35.00 in savings for a freshman borrowing the full subsidized loan amount.
- Borrowers choosing to use the MDHE in combination with MOHELA will receive maximum financial benefits during repayment, including periodic loan forgiveness programs. (See MOHELA's web site for more information.)
- The MDHE pays all administrative costs associated with the Bright Flight academic scholarship and other state aid programs from any revenues related to the student loan programs. This allows the maximum amount of appropriated tax payer dollars to be given directly to students.
- Part of the MDHE's mission is to increase successful participation in higher education in Missouri, and thus the MDHE conducts extensive outreach with high school students, their families, and their high school counselors. During the 2008-09 academic year, the MDHE presented or exhibited at 90 events, such as college fairs, and reached more than 17,000 students and families.
