Need
Student Demand
Graduates of our own Teacher Education Program have told us that they wish we had a master’s program in education. They know that a graduate degree is important for career advancement and for improved effectiveness in teaching. Surveys of area school districts have provided information to use in analyzing not only the need for a graduate education program, but also the types of programs that are desired in this area and the modes of course delivery that are preferred.

Market Demand:
Well qualified teachers continue to be in demand both locally, regionally, and nationally. Certified school teachers with baccalaureate degrees are motivated to earn a master’s degree both to improve their competence as teachers and to advance in their careers. In the local school district, 50% of 286 teachers have master’s degrees, according to the statistical profile on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website (http://dese.mo.gov/schooldata/four/064075/facunone.html.)
Duplication and Collaboration
Beginning in 1990 Hannibal-LaGrange College partnered with Southwest Baptist University (SBU) as a site for their master’s in education program. While that program has addressed the need in this area to some extent, a local program can more directly do so. The two schools share the same denominational affiliation, and SBU agreed to phase out its program from this site when HLG was able to offer its own master’s program.

Institutional Characteristics:
Both Hannibal-LaGrange College and its Teacher Education Program have reached the level of maturity required to successfully offer a graduate program. The college received a ten-year approval in its most recent renewal of affiliation with the Higher Learning Commission. The Teacher Education Program is approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The Teacher Education Program has been and continues to be one of the college’s strongest educational programs at the baccalaureate level. The college’s Education Division has five full-time faculty members; three with Ph.D.s, one who is ABD, and one with a master’s degree. Additionally, there is a pool of faculty outside the Education Division and adjunct faculty in the area that can help with instruction. There is sufficient faculty resource to ensure the educational quality of a graduate program.
