Repayment Options

Your loan repayment start date depends on the type of loan you borrowed. You are required to begin making payments on time, even if you have not received a payment notice or statement from your loan holder. If you do not receive a payment notice, request one from your loan holder immediately.

Subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan borrowers are eligible for a six-month grace period, beginning the day after you stop attending school at least half time. The first payment is due within 60 days after your grace period ends. Although you are not required to make payments during your grace period, it is a good idea to do so if you are able.

Federal PLUS borrowers' first payment is generally due within 60 days after the loan is fully disbursed. However, graduate and professional student PLUS borrowers may request an immediate in-school Deferment. Additionally, for loans first disbursed on or after July 1, 2008, parent PLUS borrowers may request to postpone their payments while the student is attending school at least half time. It is wise for PLUS borrowers to make interest payments after the loan's first disbursement and during periods of deferment.

Repayment Plans
Your six-month grace period will fly by fast, so don't sit around waiting for your lender to contact you first. Be proactive and start looking into how much your loan payments will be when your grace period ends.

Repayment Problems
Do not panic if you are having trouble making your student loan payments - Contact your loan provider to ask about your options.

If your loan is owned by MOHELA, Missouri's designated secodary market, you may also be periodically eligible for a loan forgiveness program. For more information contact MOHELA.
