The Master's in Business Administration (M.B.A.) core at Central's Summit Center will be the same as the M.B.A. core offered on campus. The core consists of 6 courses as described in Form PS (below). The M.B.A. has been offered on campus for many years and was approved by the CBHE at the program level. Many options exist in the M.B.A. beyond the 6 course core. The options comprise 4 additional courses. The 6 M.B.A. core courses as well as the Ethical Strategic Leadership option will be offered at Central's Summit Center in Lee's Summit . The details of this can be found in Form PS (below).

Rational for M.B.A. in Ethical Strategic Leadership at UCM's Summit Center

Rationale includes the results from the Eduventures Survey conducted late in fall 2006 (below) as well as feedback from the Management Department Business Advisory Board in October, 2007. Additionally, three recent reports that indicate demand for M.B.A. programs can be found at the end of Form SE (below).

Executive Summary of Eduventures Survey
for M.B.A. Demand for UCM at the Summit Center in Lee's Summit, Missouri

Late in the fall semester of 2006, the University of Central Missouri contracted with Eduventures to conduct a survey regarding interest in an M.B.A. program at UCM's Summit Center in Lee's Summit Missouri. The number of respondents contacted was n=813. However, the full 30 items were only asked of n=123 respondents who were interested in pursuing an M.B.A. degree. The mean age of these respondents was 33.5 years and the population was 57% female.

The survey information was extensive over the 30 items; the important information has been summarized below.

The most commonly requested M.B.A. subject area was in the area of management. Respondents reported that the most important criteria for selecting an M.B.A. program were the program quality, AACSB accreditation, and course schedule. Price appears to not be a primary criteria for M.B.A. program selection. However, location is a very big concern for the respondents and they are not willing to travel more than twenty or thirty miles for a program. This effectively eliminates UCM's Warrensburg campus from consideration.

The respondents overwhelmingly preferred traditional classroom format and hybrid (combination of traditional and on-line) formats to on-line courses. They also preferred 15 week night classes to condensed modes of delivery.

Approximately 25% of the respondents were aware that UCM has graduate and undergraduate programs at the Summit Center in Lee's Summit and a similar number were aware that UCM had business degree programs. However, a majority indicated that they would consider enrolling in an M.B.A. program at the Summit Center. The primary motivation for considering a UCM M.B.A. would be location, and the perceived quality, flexibility and convenience of a UCM M.B.A. at the Summit Center.

Student Demand

See Form PC (above) for summary of Eduventures Survey and demand for program. Additionally, Business Week reported on August 15, 2007 in the article “M.B.A. Applications Surge” thatdemand for admission to U.S. graduate business schools has risen, and the growing number of applicants is entering what some say is the most competitive pool in recent years. The Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) reported Aug. 15 that applications to business schools are being buoyed by a confident outlook on the economy and increasing demand from employers for management degrees. In turn, schools are choosing from a pool of applicants who are equally or better qualified academically than last year's class. The majority of the group's member schools are in the U.S.” The article went on to say that “the boom in applications mirrors an increase in registration volume for the GMAT—the B-school entrance exam—which this year jumped by 6.2% within the U.S. and 21% outside the U.S. And nearly two-thirds (64%) of full-time M.B.A. programs reported an increase in application volume compared to 2006.”

Market Demand and Societal needs

One example of the demand for students with these skills appeared August 17, 2007 in the Chronicle of higher education (page A10). “M.B.A.'s may need more ‘soft skills'” Which said a report by two DePaul University professors “concludes that recruiters want business schools to pay more attention to people-oriented skills like leadership and communication.” The research analyzed a U.S. Department of Labor database that was derived form a study of 8,600 managers in 2006.

The NACE Research Job Outlook 2007 Special Report on M.B.A. Recruiting (p. 23) indicates

  • “manufacturers are most aggressive about increasing their M.B.A. hires; these employers plan to increase M.B.A. hires by 32.4%,…service employers expect to increase M.B.A. hiring by 15.4%”
  • Regionally, employers in the Midwest anticipate 50.8% increase in hiring M.B.A.s which is the second highest hiring increase rate by region.

In Business Week, December 5, 2006 in the article “Forecast, M.B.A. hiring up again” it was reported that “the hiring of M.B.A. graduates is surging this academic year, with employers expecting to bring in 22.1% more M.B.A. grads in 2007 than they did in 2006, according to a survey of companies across the country. An improved economy, business growth and employee retirement all contribute to this escalating demand for newly minted M.B.A.s, says Andrea Koncz, employment information manager for the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). And with growing industries comes growing competition to attract the best and brightest. (see http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/content/dec2006/bs20061205_649537.htm?chan=search).

Duplication and Collaboration

This program is unique; there is no similar program at an AACSB accredited institution in the greater Kansas City area. An M.B.A. in Ethical Strategic Leadership will meet the demands indicated in Form SE (above); employers are seeking both core M.B.A. skills and the soft skills that this program will provide. The other AACSB accredited schools of business in the KC metropolitan area do not offer an M.B.A. program and concentration that is similar to this program; this program is unique.

Not applicable

Faculty Characteristics and Faculty Qualifications

  • Any special requirements (degree status, training, etc.) for assignment of teaching for this degree/certificate.

100% of the courses will be taught by faculty with a terminal degree. The Harmon College of Business Administration (HCBA) is accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business , see www.aacsb.edu). The AACSB requires that graduate faculty be academically qualified (AQ) which involves holding a terminal degree and continuing scholarship. The HCBA intends to maintain AACSB Accreditation and meet the standards for such accreditation; should the AACSB standards change then the staffing of this program may change as well.

  • Estimated percentage of credit hours that will be assigned to full time faculty. Please use the term "full time faculty" (and not FTE) in your descriptions here.

We anticipate that all of the courses will be taught by full time AQ faculty; use of part-time AQ faculty is not anticipated at this time, however, the college would like to retain the right to hire qualified part-time faculty with terminal degrees where appropriate. As stated previously, the HCBA intends to maintain AACSB Accreditation and meet the standards for such accreditation.

  • Expectations for professional activities, special student contact, teaching/learning innovation.

The HCBA faculty will be readily available for contact with students, in many courses Team Based Learning (TBLÒ) will be utilized. Students will not be required to attend professional events but will be strongly encouraged.

Enrollment Projections

  • Student FTE majoring in program by the end of five years.

See Form SE below

  • Percent of full time and part time enrollment by the end of five years.

This is a part-time evening program targeted to working adults. Therefore, we do not anticipate any full time students in the program. Projections are shown above in “Form SE”

Student and Program Outcomes

  • Number of graduates per annum at three and five years after implementation.

This is a two year M.B.A. program. Therefore, we anticipate 32 graduates at the end of year three and seventy three graduates at the end of year five.
  • Special skills specific to the program.

The UCM M.B.A. Core outcomes are attached separately in a 5 page document
  • Proportion of students who will achieve licensing, certification, or registration.

This program is not for a field which has licensing, certification, etc.
  • Performance on national and/or local assessments, e.g., percent of students scoring above the 50th percentile on normed tests; percent of students achieving minimal cut-scores on criterion-referenced tests. Include expected results on assessments of general education and on exit assessments in a particular discipline as well as the name of any nationally recognized assessments used.

    N/A
  • Placement rates in related fields, in other fields, unemployed.

    N/A
  • Transfer rates, continuous study.

M.B.A. programs do not typically allow transfer of a significant number of courses. Transfer from other AACSB accredited programs would be considered as appropriate especially for the 11th course which is not specified in the curriculum.
The M.B.A. Core courses have a prerequisite order:

The three M.B.A. blocks within the M.B.A. core must be taken together (e.g., Econ with CIS, Acct with Fin and Mkt with Mgt).
Econ/CIS block is prerequisite for Acct/Fin block which is prerequisite for the Mkt/Mgt block. However, if a student needs to take time off from the program between the blocks, this does not pose any problem. Therefore continuous study is not required.

Program Accreditation
  • Institutional plans for accreditation, if applicable, including accrediting agency and timeline. If there are no plans to seek specialized accreditation, please provide reasons.

The HCBA at UCM is accredited by the AACSB. UCM plans to continue to maintain this accreditation. The M.B.A. program is accredited as one of the UCM business programs. (See “Quality Assurance for the Program” below for more information).

Alumni and Employer Survey

  • Expected satisfaction rates for alumni, including timing and method of surveys

The HCBA at UCM surveys alumni at least every 5 years. The timing is one year prior to the maintenance of accreditation self study (next survey is scheduled for Spring 2008).
  • Expected satisfaction rates for employers, including timing and method of surveys

No plans for this at this time.

Faculty Qualifications (see form PG above section “Faculty Characteristics and Faculty Qualifications”)

Quality Assurance for the Program

The Harmon College of Business Administration (HCBA) and the Department of Management and Business Communication will administer this M.B.A. program in Ethical Strategic Leadership.

The Office of Extended Campus will provide support at the Summit Center. The department and college will maintain exclusive responsibility for course staffing and curriculum decisions. The Office of Extended Campus provides administrative and secretarial staff at the Summit Center as well as the planning and coordination of classes and classroom needs. This is consistent with the administrative structure for other UCM programs that are offered at the Summit Center.

All business programs including the on-campus M.B.A. programs are accredited by the AACSB (see www.aacsb.edu). The HCBA intends to maintain AACSB Accreditation and meet the standards for such accreditation. This accreditation mandates accreditation reviews every five years. The next accreditation review is scheduled for Fall 2009.

To achieve accreditation, business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process, and achievement of learning goals in degree programs. These standards are mission-linked. During the accreditation process, schools are visited and evaluated by business school deans, and corporate representatives with detailed knowledge of management education, applying accreditation standards that are widely accepted in the educational community.

AACSB International is a not-for-profit organization consisting of more than 900 educational organizations and corporations. Its mission is excellence in management education in colleges and universities. Headquartered in Tampa, FL., USA, AACSB International is the premier accrediting agency and service organization for business schools.

Support Services for Students at UCM's Summit Center
Advisement and Support Services

Students can search 130 periodical databases including full text runs of over 12,000 journals, newspapers and newsletters via the internet. A collection of more than 5000 books is available online including many standard reference resources. Library materials that are not available in electronic format may be ordered online and mailed directly to the student. Students located at the Central Summit Center may opt for next day delivery via a courier service from JCKL to that site. UCM students are eligible to borrow library materials from any of the 56 participating MOBIUS (Missouri Bibliographic Information User System) libraries giving them access to over 14 million items.

The library's website (http://library.ucmo.edu/) offers links to its research databases, online forms for requesting delivery of material, online access to librarians, and many web pages offering information and guidance to distance learners. Student may contact the reference team by email, telephone, or live chat using the contact information provided on the website. Email addresses and telephone numbers are available for subject area librarians who can be contacted for more specialized assistance.

Librarians are being added within the Blackboard courseware environment. A link to the library website is included in the course resources. JCKL librarians are also available to present bibliographic instruction at courses meeting at the Summit Center. Information literacy online tutorials have been developed to assist distance students doing research.

JCKL has a Distance Learning Librarian with the specific responsibility to assist distance students. This librarian also serves as an advocate for the distance community's informational needs by serving on university and library committees involved with distance education issues. The distance learning librarian also conducts ongoing assessment of distance library services and resources.
